Derived from the Indian term for 'colorful,' Rangla Punjab draws inspiration from the rural areas of Punjab, a state in India known for its love for vibrant colors. This affection for hues is evident in their attire, accessories, and decorations. The design team, led by Ketan Jawdekar, has skillfully infused these colors into a contemporary design, creating a unique dining atmosphere that reflects the lively spirit of Punjab.
Located on the rooftop of a commercial establishment, Rangla Punjab is divided into various sections, each boasting a unique identity. The restaurant features an indoor section with a bar and open pantry for desserts, an informal seating area on the terrace, and a private section for about thirty people. A standout feature is an actual truck used as a centerpiece in the open area, complete with a staircase leading to the upper level.
The design team prioritized the use of sustainable and local materials in constructing the restaurant. Local stone Kudappah and brick pavers were used for flooring, while walls were left exposed without paint. The decor features earthen pots, old RCC galley, kite thread rolls, and old cassettes. A window adorned with colorful glass bangles creates an interesting pattern as daylight filters through.
Rangla Punjab was designed keeping in mind the principles of rural Punjabi cuisine restaurants, known as Dhabas, which are typically situated on highways and serve home-cooked food. These establishments are built with locally available materials and have an earthy feel. Natural light and ventilation are key factors, and the design team has successfully adapted these principles in Rangla Punjab.
The project, which began in April 2016 and was completed in December 2016, faced a significant challenge in lifting an actual truck to the terrace level, about 24 meters above ground level. This was achieved with the help of a crane and secured with cables. The result is a stunning feature that adds to the restaurant's rustic charm.
For its innovative design and successful fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, Rangla Punjab was awarded the Golden A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
